This fall, I’m back at my alma mater St. John’s College in Santa Fe NM, co-teaching financial literacy with the eminent Charlie Bergman!
We’re guiding 22 freshmen and seniors through an 8-session course designed to build lifelong financial skills. Thanks to an anonymous donor’s generosity, each student will receive a $500 matching contribution to a 529 account, a practical start to saving for graduate school or retirement.
Our first two classes were on the topics of “Understanding Capitalism” and “Budgeting,” and lay the foundation for financial empowerment. This year, I’m particularly excited to introduce students to impact and ethical investing, along with exploring diverse career pathways in finance and business.
I often think about how different my early career might have been if I’d had access to a course like this during my own college years. The financial knowledge and confidence these students are gaining now would have saved me years of trial and error. There’s nothing quite like equipping the next generation with the tools to make informed financial decisions while they’re still in college.
The engagement and questions from these students have been inspiring!
